1. What are cosmetic braces?

Cosmetic braces, also known as invisible braces, are a highly aesthetic alternative to traditional braces as they are much more discreet and subtle. The foundation of cosmetic braces is the use of color-matching materials to the teeth instead of the noticeable metal applied in traditional braces.

Currently, there are three most popular invisible braces and we do offer the “trio” at Sydney Dental that you can freely choose from as follows:

1.1 Ceramic braces

These are basically metal braces with tooth-colored brackets in place of gray brackets and wires. This is to make the braces less visible than traditional braces and thereby the user less self-conscious about them.

There are certain pros and cons from ceramic braces.

The upsidesThe downsides
  • Less noticeable than traditional braces, thanks to clear or tooth-colored brackets;
  • Move teeth faster than clear aligners (like Invisalign and AISmile). Typically, ceramic braces take around 18-36 months to do the job of correcting your teeth;
  • Popular clear aligners like Invisalign and AI Smile may take at least a year to take effect, even though much straightening is not required. In addition, clear aligners are not helpful with serious dental misalignment or malocclusion;
  • Unlike metal braces that only have gray or metallic silver, you can pick your favorites as ceramic braces come in a variety of colors;
  • Much less interference with imaging. Traditional braces can mess with signals in imaging. This is not as much the case for ceramic braces.
  • Slower correction than metal  braces. As they are more breakable, the hassle of repairing broken brackets or making adjustments between appointments can totally interfere with the dental correction progress;
  • More costly than metal braces. Ceramic braces can be $1000 to $2000 more expensive than traditional ones.
  • Risk of gum sensitivity. As ceramic brackets are larger than the metal ones, it can be harder to keep the area around the brackets clean, which can result in gum swelling or receding if your toothbrush fails to reach the gumline or enamel;
  • They could stain. The elastic lines that hold the wire to the brackets are likely to be and remain stained till they are replaced;
  • Slightly less durable than metal. Ceramic braces are more than twice as likely to break or chip off than traditional braces. Also, the removal of the adhesive can lead to damage to the surface of the tooth (the enamel).

What colors can you choose from?

Your ceramic braces come with the following parts whose color can be changed during the treatment process:

  • Brackets. These stick to your teeth and are typically provided in white;
  • Archwires. The wires hold around your teeth, linking all the brackets and creating pressure against your teeth to align them. These usually come in silver, white, or frosted to blend with the brackets of light colors;
  • Elastic bands. These bands are bound to hooks on the brackets. They hold the archwire and help make adjustments to the position of the teeth and jaw. These bands are available in almost all colors. You may go with colors that match well with your skin tone, or be creative and mix and match to create a rainbowy smile.

Are you a good candidate for ceramic braces?

These braces are good for you if all of you’ve got all of your adult teeth and they’ve stopped growing. This is to guarantee a quick fix and a lower risk of brackets breaking off due to the movement force of teeth.

Ceramic braces are optimal for patients who want to go subtle with their treatment. This is because this type of braces is less visible as they are typically tooth-colored or white. If you are working an office full-time job or studying at school and don’t want people to focus their attention on them, this tooth-straightening treatment may be ideal for you.

The takeaway

Ceramic braces are perfect for those who wish to be low-key on their braces. However, they are somewhat less long-lasting and take much more time to align your bite than traditional braces. They are also more expensive and easier to stain than the metal ones.

Consult with your dental provider before you make your choice of metal or ceramic braces because even if it is not your preference, it may be more effective for your particular oral conditions.

1.2 Clear aligners (like Invisalign and AISmile)

Clear aligners are transparent trays of special material created to straighten teeth just like the job of metal braces. They work by imposing gentle yet constant force to move teeth to the desired position without the heavy presence of metal wires and brackets. Interestingly, these aligners are customized for each user with the help of digital scanning.

Feeling like comparing traditional braces and clear aligners? Here you go.

Traditional bracesAISmile
  • Highly noticeable
  • Non-detachable
  • Hygiene practices can be tough because they’re fixed in one place
  • Risk of abrasion inside the mouth
  • Can fix serious cases of dental problems and generally takes longer than aligners
  • Almost invisible
  • Detachable: users can easily remove them to eat, brush, or floss teeth
  • Oral care is much easier since removable
  • Fit smoothly on your teeth
  • Designed to fix slight to moderate dental defects, thus takes less time of correction than metal braces

3. The aftercare for aligners

To maintain the straightening effects of clear aligners, you need to do the following post treatment:

  • Use retainers. The straightening effect of aligners won’t last forever without proper maintenance. The dental provider can give you retainers to avoid your teeth moving back to the old positions;
  • Mind what you eat. It may be possible that your teeth will become sensitive following treatment. It is best not to take in too crunchy or hard foods within a couple of days post-treatment;
  • Practice good oral hygiene. Brush teeth twice and floss every day to keep up your oral wellness. Poor hygiene will turn the dental treatment into a waste;
  • Pay regular visits to your dentist. Treatment done doesn’t mean you are through with the oral maintenance work for long-lasting outcomes. See your dentist every 6 months for checkups and to make sure that your teeth are not shifting back to the original places.

4. Frequently asked questions about clear aligners

cosmetic braces

Question 1: Are clear aligners as effective as metal braces?
Invisible alignment brings many pros in comparison with metal alignment. They are subtle-looking and convenient for patients in eating and cleaning as being removable. Greater comfort is also a big plus. Nonetheless, users have to be very consistent with wearing invisible aligners for a certain time of the day every day to have the desired effects on their teeth.

Question.2: Is everyone a good candidate for clear aligners?

Clear aligners can be a good orthodontic option for patients of all ages where slight to medium correction is needed. However, it may be challenging for children because great compliance is a must for them to work on teeth. Whatever the case is, always consult your dental provider to see if clear aligners are a good fit for you or your children.

Question 3. How long will it take for me to fully recover from treatment?

As invisible aligners come with much more comfort and shorter treatment time compared to metal braces, getting used to them is also easier and less recovery time required. That said, it may vary depending on the correction degree and the compliance of the patient in particular cases. Typically, the recovery from clear aligners takes somewhere between 13 and 15 months.

Question 4: Are the results I get from clear aligners permanent?

The results can be permanent only if receivers apply proper maintenance post-treatment. There is a natural inclination of teeth shifting back to their original locations after the aligners are gone. The ideal method to keep them right in place is to wear retainers. Patients can choose between fixed or detachable retainers to maintain the correction effects.

Question 5: Are there any side effects from this treatment?

No side effects are known to be a result of this invisible orthodontic method. Clear aligners are among the safest and most convenient dental treatments. Moreover, the provider will only recommend aligners after thorough examination of your oral conditions. Chances of irritation and discomfort are down to zero and the majority of wearers get used to the new aligners in just a couple of weeks.

Question 6: How much do I have to pay for the clear aligners?

One downside of these new-technology braces is they are more expensive than the traditional braces. Generally, the cost of having clear aligners varies depending on the straightening effect needed and the brand of the aligners. Nevertheless, with its many aforementioned upsides, the benefits of clear aligners do outweigh the cost.

Lingual braces

This type of braces are attached to the back of your teeth, the side closer to your tongue for them to be “invisible” to the eyes. They can be custom made by using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software.

One-quarter of all dental patients who wear braces are adults. Other adults should but don’t get their teeth corrected because they’d be embarrassed about wearing braces. If you are in this group of adults, then lingual braces may be right for you.

Let’s talk about the pros and cons again.

The goodThe not so good
  • Invisibility. The braces parts, including brackets, wires, and elastic bands are now playing hide-and-seek in the back of your teeth. Others won’t see unless you choose to reveal them by opening your mouth wide.
  • Possibly less pain. Certain studies have found that lingual braces could cause less pain than braces worn at the front side of teeth
  • Fewer lifestyle adjustments
  • Fewer orthodontists specialized in lingual braces
  • Speech changes. Both labial and lingual braces will affect your talking at first. However, the issues gradually subside with time
  • More costly than traditional braces in most cases, especially for the custom-made
  • Cleaning trouble as food particles get stuck between the brackets from time to time
