Dental implants are getting more and more of a preference among patients who have lost a single tooth, multiple or all teeth across the world. The treatment is considered to be the most durable and stable tooth restoration, and hence, a worthwhile long-term investment. A dental implant is most of the time referred to as the entire functional piece consisting of a titanium post, an abutment, and a top prosthetic. This post from Sydney dental will discuss in detail about what a dental implant prosthetic is and its types as well as advantages.

Whatever your case is, it is best that you have a consultation with a dental specialist at a reputable clinic for accurate information and examination of your dental state. They will give you the best treatment recommendations and decide if dental implant treatment is right for you.

1. What is a dental implant prosthetic?

Dental implants play as replacement tooth roots. They come in titanium screws that are to be inserted deep into the jawbone to create a strong base for holding a prosthetic on top. This prosthetic is the visible tooth restoration part to be placed as the last step involved in an implant treatment. This replacement can be a dental crown, bridge, or denture, depending on the needs of the patients as well as the type of dental implants they are getting.

2. The three types of dental implant prosthetics

2.1. Dental crowns

A dental crown is like a cap that covers the surface of a tooth. It is designed to be of the same size and color of a natural tooth. Dental crowns are ideal for placing on top of a single-tooth implant or multiple of them that are apart from each other across the two arches.

For placing an implant-supported crown, the affected tooth needs to get extracted first. Next, an implant post is put into the jawbone, followed by the placement of an abutment, which is a metal connector between the implant screw and the top prosthesis. This abutment will stick out of your gum line and the dentist will stitch the gum shut around it.

Right after the implant post insertion, a provisional dental crown is attached to the abutment. After the surgical area has fully healed as the implant has completely integrated with the jawbone, a permanent crown will be placed. This dental crown is made in the dental lab according to the measurements of your teeth and jaw taken during your initial appointment to look and function optimally just like original teeth.

2.2. Dental bridges

Unlike a dental crown that is a separate cap placed on the implant, a dental bridge comprises two dental crowns on either side and an artificial tooth or teeth between. Dental bridges are therefore used to restore a set of decayed, damaged, or lost teeth that are located next to each other.

As dental bridges are used together with dental implants, they are also under the name of implant-supported bridges. This option uses dental implants as support for dental crowns and fake teeth when original teeth fail to do so. The procedure for placing an implant-supported bridge is similar to that of a dental crown. The difference is two implants are placed at both sides to secure the two crowns in the bridge instead of only one implant post for a single dental crown.

2.3. Dentures

Dentures are artificial teeth and gums designed to replace a complete arch of teeth that have been damaged, decayed, or lost. They are an ideal choice for patients whose most of the teeth in the jaw are missing or severely damaged.

Dentures used as top prosthesis for dental implants can be referred to as implant-supported dentures. These dentures are fixed and permanent, which is different from conventional complete dentures that can be removed at your convenience. Implant-supported dentures can also be called an all-on-X, which can be:

  • An all-on-four. This means a denture is attached to four implants spread out in one arch;

  • An all-on-six. This is the procedure where a denture is supported by six implants placed in one single arch.

    In comparison to conventional complete dentures, implant-supported dentures bring many perks, including:

    • Clearer speech. Implants sit securely in the mouth so no more mumbling or slurs from loose, sliding traditional dentures;

    • Easier eating. Your biting and chewing ability are stored to its full capacity so you can have anything you want without worrying about a moving or cracking a denture;

    • Greater convenience as you don’t need to remove implant-supported dentures in order to clean them;

    • More comfort. After recovery, implant-supported dentures are fused into and thus become a part of your body. It will look and feel so natural that you will forget the implants are there for the majority of time.

      3. Does it hurt to get dental implants?

      The answer is no. The oral surgeon will put you under local or general anesthesia so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. Usually, local anesthesia, or a numbing medication is used but sometimes sedation is recommended for those with anxieties over the procedure. The anesthesia options will be talked about during your first appointment with the dentist because every case differs from person to person.

      4. How to take care of a dental implant prosthetic?

      As dental implant prosthetics work like original teeth, proper care and maintenance for them are similar to the recommended daily oral hygiene practice. To keep your dental implants in good condition, do the following:

      • Brush, floss, and rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash every day. Make sure that you use a soft toothbrush and quality toothpaste;

      • Pay regular visits to the dentist for checkups and cleanings, most ideally every three to six months;

      • Have an X-ray to examine the state of your dental implants once a year.

        Without consistent, proper care on a daily basis, problems or even serious complications may occur. An infection or peri-implantitis is among one of them.

        5. A note from Sydney Dental
