Your general dentist may refer you to an endodontist if your particular case is complicated and more difficult to deal with than normal.

A root canal usually includes 3 steps which may take you at least several days depending on the tooth’s conditions.

6.1 Clean the root canal

First off, the dentist will take an X-ray of the tooth to have a closer look at the structure of the root canal and decide if there is any infection in an adjacent bone. They will apply local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth. As the nerve is already dead, anesthesia is not a necessity, however, most dentists still numb the area to give you extra comfort and ease of mind. To keep the area dry and prevent entry of saliva during the course of the procedure, the dentist will place a rubber sheet around the area. After the application of the numbing medication and the rubber dam, the dentist will drill a small access hole on the tooth surface using specialized tools for the purpose of removing damaged or dead pulp tissues and then clean out the root canal.

6.2 Fill the entire root canal

The tooth is considered dead following treatment. The root is then cleaned and sterilized using a range of root canal files. As the work is done, water or sodium hypochlorite will be sprayed in the area to flush away any remaining particles.

After the tooth is completely cleaned, it is then sealed shut using a dental adhesive cement. Some dentists would wait 7 days before conducting the seal. For example, if there is an infection, your dentist may put medication into the tooth to clear it up. Others may opt to close the tooth up the same day it is cleaned. If the sealing isn’t done on the same day, a temporary filling is placed in the outside hole of the tooth to prevent saliva and food from entering until the next appointment.

At the next visit, a seal paste and rubber compound are used to fill the emptied root chamber of the tooth.
